In Yeshiva, every hagba was performed with seriousness and steadiness with a commitment to protect the writing and the parchment of the Sifrei Torah – simply because the Rosh Yeshiva stood by every hagbaand directed us on every detail how to do hagba and glila. When I went to other Bait Knesetsand I saw the many strange ways they would do hagba and glila, how the writing and parchment were in danger, the disgrace of twisting the Sefer Torah in all directions, the Sefer getting caught on the lip of the bima, seeing the signs of being banged on the top and bottom of the parchment, "saving' the Sefer with a Talis after the parchment sagged from allowing it to be too loose, and tens of other problems, I simply couldn't even look at a hagba being done because of my great grief. Therefore, I decided to write a booklet with pictures, showing how to be in control of the Sefer Torah and that people should understand how to do hagba and how to do glilareally according to the Halacha. I hope that I explained well and that this booklet will fix the previous mistreatment of the Sifrei Torah, and we should merit seeing many hagbas which only show off the great beauty of our Sifrei Torah.
